Protect Utah Health Care: Call on Our Reps to Support Extending ACA Subsidies

Why This Matters Right Now

As Congress considers whether to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance subsidies — often called “Obamacare subsidies” — it’s urgent that Utah’s Congressional Representatives act to protect coverage for thousands of families in our state. If Congress fails to extend these subsidies before they expire on December 31, 2025, millions of Americans face skyrocketing premiums and loss of coverage — and Utahns will be hit hard.

A discharge petition has already gathered support from enough House members to force a vote to extend the subsidies for two years — an unusual and powerful procedural step that shows real momentum and concern that letting them lapse will harm everyday Americans.

How Utah Would Be Affected

  • Nearly 12% of all Utah residents — about 421,900 people — get health insurance through the ACA marketplace. That’s one of the highest rates in the nation. Utah Business
  • Almost 96% of those marketplace enrollees receive federal premium tax credits to make coverage affordable. Gardner University
  • If these enhanced subsidies expire as scheduled, many Utah families could see their health insurance premiums skyrocket — in some cases by thousands of dollars per year. KPCW
  • Children make up a large share of Utah’s marketplace enrollment, meaning families with kids would be especially vulnerable. Gardner University

What’s at Stake

Without extended subsidies:

  • Utah families could face huge premium increases or be forced off their current plans. KPCW
  • The shift could make healthcare access harder for middle-income Utahns, small business owners, and self-employed workers who rely on marketplace coverage. Utah Business
  • Nationally, 20–24+ million Americans are expected to be affected by the lapse of enhanced subsidies if a deal isn’t reached. Reuters
